Purpose
The primary purpose of DataModel.Org is to provide a means of communicating the needs and experiences of Data Modelers, Database Designers and Data Architects. It also is a place for companies needing our services to locate database consultants.
Reasoning
Since most companies have fairly large programming teams, sharing ideas and solving problems isn’t very difficult. However, most companies, even very large ones, have very small database support teams, composed primarily of DBAs and operators. Many companies have programmers charged with designing the databases needed in their systems. This practice leads to poor enterprise-level database integration, because each grouping of tables is built "in a vacuum".
Some companies hire Database Analysts to support the programmers, but rarely in large quantities. Therefore, people in these positions tend to work in isolation from others in the same field, finding it difficult to locate sources to help answer questions. I personally have felt on many occasions that I was "re-inventing the wheel" and wished that I could look over someone else’s shoulder.
Therefore, DataModel.Org is created to solve that problem.
Organization
(Open to suggestions)
At this time, the organization is simplistic. There is a president in charge of the overall direction and a supporting position in each of the 5 main focuses (DBMS, Tools, Membership, Samples and Archives). At this time, the positions are open.
Depending on the growth of the organization, more positions may be necessary for Legal, Secretarial, Treasurer, etc.
