What is this site all about?

Glad you asked. Data Modeling is very important to the Webmaster. So much, in fact, that he created this web site just to provide a connecting point for anyone else that does data modeling. For more, see the Mission Statement.

How can I market myself to my company?

The key here is to make yourself into such a valuable asset that no one even questions your worth to the organization. First, you need to get as involved as possible in the development projects, as early as possible, and interface directly with business and IT resources equally. Capture the data requirements from the business, design the most elegant solutions possible, and communicate all of this in terms each different audience can understand. Keep information (metadata) forever and be able to answer questions about anything quickly and accurately. No easy task? Well, it takes dedication and effort to become a valuable asset to the company.

Are you an employee for a modeling vendor?

Not a chance. Your friendly webmaster wants to see all vendors improve their products, so is very independently vocal with any and all of them equally. If they will listen to their customers, they might make better products.

How can I help you?

DataModel.Org is truly a labor of love for the Webmaster, so he pays the hosting fees and does all maintenance himself. You can help him offset the costs by becoming a sponsoring member. It is only $20 per year for an individual membership. Visit the Membership Page to find out more.

Why should anyone model data?

Excellent question. You model data for the same reasons you model a car, house or bridge. The materials needed for any of these is expensive, and just cobbling it together is a bad use of time and effort. An architect would spend hours or days designing a house. An automotive engineer could spend years figuring out the best aerodynamics and power combinations for a car. Data is a valuable asset for any corporation, so just throwing the data in some file is not a good use of resources. We spend hours, days or even months arriving at the most efficient, most useful way to store information for our companies.

Would you like to ask a question?

If you become a member (click the Membership link on the navigation bar), you can ask questions here. More than that, there is a lot of content just for members only, including the library, a glossary, career information, etc.
